If you’ve been light-headed, experienced dizziness or unexplained blackouts
If you’re breathless at rest or during exercise, or have an elevated heart rate
A family history of coronary heart disease, heart failure, or a close relative who had a heart attack

Here’s everything you need to know — from preparing for your visit to getting your results.
No special preparation is needed.
Avoid oils or creams on your arms, legs and chest area the morning of your test — this helps the electrodes stick properly.
Wear loose-fitting clothing as we’ll need access to your chest, arms and ankles.
Bring a list of current medications if you have one.
You’ll be welcomed into the clinic by your physiologist who will confirm your details and talk you through the test.
You’ll need to remove or pull up your top — a disposable sheet or gown is offered if preferred.
Skin is gently prepared by wiping the electrode areas to remove dry skin and natural oils.
If you have chest hair, a small area may need to be shaved for good electrode contact.
Ten small sticky electrodes are placed on your chest, arms and ankles, connected by cables to the ECG machine.
All you need to do is relax and lie still — the machines are very sensitive and pick up tiny electrical impulses.
The recording is digitally uploaded for analysis, then electrodes and cables are removed.
The whole process takes no longer than 15 minutes.
Your ECG will be analysed — several measurements are taken so results aren’t available immediately.

Absolutely. We have both male and female physiologists. Just let us know when you book.
An abnormal reading doesn’t always mean something is wrong — it can be a normal variant. If further investigation is needed, we’ll advise you on next steps and can refer you appropriately.
An ECG records the electrical activity of your heart. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound that shows the structure and movement of your heart. They look at different things and are often done together for a complete picture.
